Acclaimed classic adventure completes the series on PlayStation systems

Wishes are coming true on PlayStation! We are elated to announce that the classic, original Shantae game is now available digitally on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 systems, coinciding with the 21st anniversary of the game’s initial release on Game Boy Color. Now offered on PlayStation hardware for the first time, the PS4 and PS5 versions of this fan-favorite title are priced at $9.99 and rated E10+ by the ESRB, and a new launch trailer can be seen here.

First released 21 years ago — on June 2, 2002 — Shantae is the beloved action-adventure-platformer that introduced the world to the titular hair-whipping, hip-shaking, shape-shifting Half-Genie. One of the most sought-after handheld titles of its era, the game puts you in control of Shantae, guardian of Scuttle Town, as she seeks out four elemental stones to stop the nefarious pirate, Risky Boots. Venturing from one end of Sequin Land to the other, Shantae fights fiendish foes, explores treacherous labyrinths, gains amazing new creature transformations, conquers mini-games, uses items, and meets friends such as Rottytops, Sky, and Bolo.

Running on Limited Run Games‘ Carbon Engine, the PS4 and PS5 editions of Shantae preserve the graphics, sound, and gameplay of the game’s vintage release, updated with new features such as control options, save states, visual filters, and bonus content including a mini art gallery. Alongside the standard GBC mode, this version of the game also includes the Game Boy Advance functionality of the original cartridge, which adds an extra transformation and an alternative color palette.

This release of the original Shantae marks the first time that all five titles in the Shantae series (which also includes Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition, and Shantae and the Seven Sirens; each sold separately) have been available on PlayStation hardware. The full Shantae series — including the original Shantae — is also currently available digitally on Nintendo Switch, and most entries are also offered on Xbox systems and PC.
