After playing though half-Genie Hero, I had begun thinking of an idea for a Shantae fangame. I originally thought of simply having it be a fanstory, but I wanted to flex it out. Shantae would be the only playable… aside from a character that I made up.
The story I had planned has this current premise. Shantae finds herself once again fired from her position as Guardian Genie and being replaced by a half-genie from outside of Sequen Land. This new guardian would have relatively pale skin at the start of the game (About like what Shantae had when the kickstarter began). Unlike her last replacement, this new half-genie shows signs of being unsure about herself (Even feeling bad about taking Shantae’s job).
This other half-genie would be the other playable, and I intend to have her play a lot different from our Purple haired heroine. If the whole lore of half-genies utilizing their genie magic is still part of the franchise canon and hasn’t been retconned in any way, Kyda (One of the names I thought of) would not turn into animals by dancing. I’m still trying to think of how her genie magic is used, but ultimately, stages would be beatable with either one of them.
Another thing to note is that Kyda isn’t necessarilly the final name. Other names I had in mind include Cindra, Netta, and Kaimi. However, I am definitely leaning toward Kyda. as for her design, I’m still working on that, but I’ve imaged her with black hair and white clothing.
I’ve currently been planning out how Kyda will be as she would play a big role in this game of mine. I’m wanting this fangame to feel like it would work in the franchise’s continuity (even if it wouldn’t be considered part of it), so I’m also wanting to make sure the existing cast actually acts like they do in universe rather than having them feel look like how an average fan thinks they act.
Thoughts are appreciated, and I’ll be sure to keep certain ideas in mind (no promises that I’ll use them though).
Something else I should note is that while I have been practicing my drawing and learning to code, one thing I have no knowledge of experience in is compositions. Any previews that I end up releasing down the line would likely use music from official Shantae games or other games that would potentially fit with the scene being previewed. Should I ever manage to get to delivering a full build (not happening in the foreseeable future), I would definitely like to have music composed specially for the game. Meantime, I will use this forum post to share any concepts that I come up with.December 23, 2016 at 11:19 pm #13872
Starting off, I figured I would question the best choice for how Kyda utilizes her Genie magic
A. Singing allows her to take on various elemental forms.
B. She gains various abilities based on the enemies she touches (Like Kirby)
C. She carries an instrument of some kind which she uses to trigger her powers.
Which do you guys think would be best? Keep in mind that no matter which one is chosen, I will have to work on it gameplay mechanic wise.December 24, 2016 at 1:10 pm #13881
I just realized I have been misspelling my character’s name. Kyda is actually meant to be called Kyra. I went to look at some intro scripts I wrote when discovered this mistake.January 5, 2017 at 10:58 am #13968
Here is a concept design that I have for Kyra. Two variants that I have planned for the game. I’ll submit more completed versions later.January 6, 2017 at 1:44 pm #13979
Have you planned out how you’re going to program this game?
What programming language / program & language you are going to use to make this fan game a reality?January 7, 2017 at 12:20 pm #13988

I’ll likely code the game using either C or C++. Is for software used, I’m using the free personal version of Unity. Currently learning the works of the software.January 7, 2017 at 12:26 pm #13989
If you’re an amateur then I suggest you start low.
It’s nice to have big ideas but for starters while you’re still learning, it’s better to do something simple till you get more comfortable with the software you’re working with.
Otherwise you’ll just ruin your motivation for the final product.January 7, 2017 at 12:41 pm #13990
Thanks for the advice. Definitely a good idea. I’ll hold on to what I have so far, and I’ll work on fully learning the ins and outs by working on some simple games (likely in programs other than unity since unity is a pretty complex program for now). Luckily, I have access to fusion and game maker.January 9, 2017 at 7:02 am #14001
@zerukin Unity might be a bit tall order if you are just going to make a 2D game, that’s what Game Maker comes in for.
Anyways, while I’m somewhat fluent in game maker I don’t want to ruin all the fun for you by out right typing in the code since learning to understand the code yourself is important part of the process.
However, if you are stuck or wondering what to do or how to achieve it, I can aid you with a theory about how to achieve the result you’re looking for since that too is actually a big part of the programming and understanding how programs work. Think of it sorta like a math problem. Programming the code itself however, will be up to you.January 9, 2017 at 10:48 am #14003
Appreciate the offer, but considering what I hoped to do with the game, I’m go by heart and putting on hold and work on something smaller (Like some sort of ball based game), and once I have gained the experience return to work on this. Plus I have a grandfather who has pretty good knowledge in coding. Still, thanks for offering to help in any way. Maybe when I return to this game, we could partner up on it. the more the merrier. Games take time to develop no matter how many people there are, but more people can speed up the process if teamwork is coordinated.
Also, the fangame i was planning before putting it on hold I was hoping for 2.5D like what half genie hero has. But as you mentioned, may be more complex than what I’m ready for. I want to be a multi media artist, but I do need to take the steps. Would be meaningless if I took leaps and skipped important lessons.
